Road Dust

I pay for dust abatement on the entire road each year. Others are welcome to chip in, but it's not necessary.

Here's the process I follow:

I get started with the paperwork in mid April in order to be ready for application at the beginning of May.

County website: http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/Roads/Pages/lignin.aspx.

I fill out this form: http://www.co.marion.or.us/PW/Roads/Documents/DustAbatementPermit.pdf

I fax the form to Greg Tilley at 541-327-3929

3929 Jefferson Scio DR SE

Jefferson, OR 97352

There is 3600 ft of gravel from the highway to the first curve.

The cost is roughly $1.10 per foot.

A day before the lignin is sprayed, the county comes out and scrapes off all the loose material. This helps the lignin last longer, but it also creates small mounds on the sides of the road. This blocks the water from going into the ditches and instead forms small rivulets along the road edges. The county does not flatten these off in the fall. So, it's definitely not a perfect system, but it does help with the dust. I'm hoping to start paving some of the road before too much longer.
